The
Ontonagon Museum exhibits the
four phases of the County's
development: Maritime History,
Copper and mining, logging and
lumber, and agriculture.
Ontonagon is the oldest
permanent settlement on the
south shore of Lake Superior. A
full size replica of the
legendary Copper Boulder that
was the magnet that attracted
prospectors and set off the
first metals rush in American
History is on display. The
museum also features the
original 5th order fresnel lens
from the Ontonagon Light
Station. Research facilities and
genealogical files are
available.
The Ontonagon harbor Lighthouse
is not only the westernmost
lighthouse of Michigan's 124
lighthouses, but is also the
oldest lighthouse on the
mainland of the Copper district.
Visitors are taken through the
entire light station from ground
floor to the top of the tower
with narrative from informative
guides. Some stair climbing is
required in order to see the
whole building. Tours are at
11:00 AM, 1:30 PM and 3:30PM
daily. Special tours by
appointment. |
